Since 1998, MCAA's Student Chapter Program, a national network of chapters in colleges and universities, has introduced interested students to the career opportunities and benefits that are available through the mechanical contracting industry. Chapter members learn about the industry from their MCAA local association sponsors who provide support, help organize field trips to project sites, arrange guest speakers for chapter meetings, and more. Through these and other activities, students develop professional relationships with contractors that often evolve into summer internships and full-time employment.
Chapter members also augment their education and professional development through:
- The annual Student Chapter Summit, a conference involving chapter members, faculty, MCAA sponsors and others for lively discussions, networking, problem-solving, facility tours, and more.
- The Student Chapter Competition, which challenges chapters to prepare a bid package for a real mechanical construction project for cash prizes and industry-wide recognition.
- MCAA's annual convention, which enables students to showcase their talents, skills, and credentials for contractors who might later serve as mentors or employers.
MCERF Grants
With the additional funding provided by the Mechanical Contracting Education & Research Foundation (MCERF), MCAA
chapter grants help student chapters cover the costs of special projects, participation in the Student Chapter Competition, field trips, and/or travel to the Summit and the MCAA annual convention. A portion of those grant funds must be allocated to deserving students in the form of scholarships. MCERF funds are also used to fund grants for contractors who hire
interns, another way that our industry educates students about the potential career opportunities.
The success of this program is in the numbers. The program started with four chapters in 1998, and has grown to 36, with more developing. It's a win-win for everyone!
